Overpayments

Does anyone have suggestions on handling employee overpayments other than rev/adj the over paid check? Due to volume, the reverse/adjust process is very manual and lengthy, especially when crossing tax years. I was hoping to hear if anyone else has had success in a different manner that adjusts earnings/taxes/deductions correctly. Thanks.
