Question on GPS Mileage Calculator Feature

We are reviewing the FSCM 9.2 Image 31, GP Mileage Calculate feature. Do we need to do anything else to enable it? We know the online config to enable it. But I am there may be behind the services like Map API, etc. Could someone provide more details on how this GPS map feature works? How the map data is getting populated or if it's real time map, etc. One thing we are curious, is that if this requires, internet connection. We have our apps not exposed outside internet and if this feature some external map apis, then will that
