Upgrading primavera p6 16.2 to ver 18.8

What are the recommendations for upgrading primavera p6 16.2 to version 18.8.

Is it required to update to the latest patch of 16.2 before upgrade ? Any pain areas that users need to be vary of, during or post upgrade, from user or integration point of view.

P6 Integration API is deprecated as of version 16.1, so web services is the only go.Same with SQL server vs Oracle DB.
