Routing Options display

What is the best way to limit the number of routing options that I see for a shipment?  As opposed to many of the conversations here that address a missing route, we see over 400 routes when going to routing options from Work With Shipments.  The options are not filtering on Destination Address or Branch Plant like I thought they should.  If this is covered anywhere specifically in documentation, please share?  I thought I had read the transportation documentation a lot through the years : ) but maybe missed it.  Using 9.2.
