What is the best method to rename columns in JDE 9.2

I have to rename some JDE grid columns. Normally I would do this thru the VOCAB override functionality. unfortunately these can't be promoted across environments and also tend to lose them during upgrades or ESUs.

I was wondering if anyone has used the UDO functionality in achieving  such a change, I was looking up the following document on the Oracle KB, seems like I am missing some options,
