Has anyone created additional job opening statuses to gather detail for steps in open status?

Our organization is contemplating adding more statuses on the job opening in an effort to gather metrics on the different  steps in Open status. We have added several reasons, such as Planning Recruitment, Job Posted, Reviewing Applications, etc., but when a different status reason is selected is does not cause the creation of a new row in the job opening status history.  Because there is not a new row, we cannot report off of the time between Open-New Authorization and Open-Planning Recruitment, then Open-Planning Recruitment to Open-Job Posted.

Has anyone else had a similar need to gather this information, or have an idea of how we might accomplish this?
