Item Standard Price vs Vendor Price

Hell everyone - quick question on item prices. Does setting up a vendor price for an item simply mean it will override the standard price set at the "Purchasing attributes" pages, when sourcing is run? or you search in the catalog for the item?

How do these 2 work together?
