Database Install/Upgrade/Opatch (MOSC)

I have a problem with the database installer. when i ./runInstaller, the program starts, but presents a blank screen. from googling, i have learned, that this relates to bug 21800407  (doc.id 2294098.1), and that as a workaround, i should set env. variable _JAVA_OPTIONS to "-Dsun.java2d.xrender=false". however, i'm on a linux box, not a solaris one, so that doesnt work. the buttons are there, but the text is all pixel salad, no legible letters. do i need a linux-specific value of _JAVA_OPTIONS ?
