Is it possible to remove a disk from a running VM and keep the data intact?

OVMM 3.4

VM: Oracle Linux 7.6

Kernel: 4.1.12-124.19.7.el7uek.x86_64

Domain type: Xen HVM PV Drivers

I have a running VM (specs above) and I would like to remove a currently attached virtual disk without shutting down the VM and keep the data on the virtual disk intact so it may be cloned. Is this possible or is my only option to shut down the VM?

Per Oracle documentation a disk can removed from a VM "at any time" however when I try to remove the disk i.e. make the slot "empty", OVM fails with the following error message:

OVMAPI_4010E Attempt to send command: configure_vm to server: ovcacn07r1 failed. OVMAPI_4004E Sync command failed on server: ###.

Howdy, Stranger!
