Direct Deposit money returned from bank

When we have a stop payment on a check we just just reissue the check and make the old one a dead check.  Is there a way to handle a direct deposit that is returned from the bank?  Currently we do a reversal and reissue it as a check.  It would be nice if there was a process to have any advice become a check when returned.  How are other people handling this process?  I would be grateful for any advice.
