CommGen Access Member Sort Error

One of our communications is irregularly getting the error below. Has anyone run into this? I'm unable to recreate it in our test instance. It seems to be isolated to one particular letter code, but the reruns always go through successfully. I tried forcing the data source query to return 0 rows, but that didn't cause the error.

First operand of . is NULL, so cannot access member Sort. (180,236)
