Question on Split Partitioning of Default Partition

We have a List partition on one of the EBS database tables GL_BALANCES on GL_PERIOD with a Default Partition. If I perform a split partition of the Default partition will to add new partition for Jan 2020 (which we were supposed to perform last year but this got missed out), will the split move the data for Jan 2020 to the new partition immediately when the split partition command is run?
