Copying a Model in the Configurator

I received the below issue from a business user regarding the behaviors of a copied model in the configurator.  I have not been able to find a solution as to why a copied version of a model in the configurator would not update the bom structure when refreshed.  Any thoughts are much appreciated.

We’ve got some configurator models that have started as stand alone models and
then been converted to models connected to global rules (or the other way
around). Our process has been to copy the current configuration so we are not
