runInstaller -silent is xterm needed?

Pretty simply question I think.

Normally we fire up runInstaller to install an Oracle product and we do it in an xterm or a VNC session.

Now when running 'runInstaller -silent -responseFile xxx' do I need to be in an xterm or can I just run it via putty?
