Is it better to clone a life event and add new effective date or clone and create a new template nam

in Compensation and Benefits - EBS (MOSC) Question

We are in the process of implementing benefit life events. When you clone an existing life event it allows you to create a whole new template name or clone and insert a new effective dated row using the same template name.  What are the advantages/disadvantages to each approach?  I have encountered security exception errors on the activity guide instance when using the clone/new effective date approach. 

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated
