What is the difference between Future and Open PA period status in R12 ?

An interesting thing happened this month when someone forgot to open the PA period for one operating unit.  Cost came in, was distributed, and interfaced to the GL   Revenue also was generated and interfaced to GL. Burden costs were generated, and they distributed and interfaced to GL as well.

In earlier releases, if the PA period was in Future status, then expenditure items could be created but not interfaced to the GL.   I'm not sure when it changed because it's very rare to forget to open a period.

So.... what, if anything, is the difference between Future and Open status for Projects periods now?
