Is it mandatory to run the Global Standards Compliance Checker (GSCC) ?

Hi all! We are upgrading from 12.1.3 to 12.2.8. Right now we are at 12.2.0. Is it mandatory to run the Global Standards Compliance Checker (GSCC) at this point ? Many upgrade blogs seems to have skipped it...
