Sales Order Management Substitution

I have a question about item substitutes in sale order entry.   I
understand the basic setup.  However, if I
have an item X to be substituted by item Y and also have item Y to be substituted
by item Z ( X to Y, Y to Z) and no availability exits for items X and Y, but
item X has availability, will item X be used?
