Unit Weight Is Not Updated On Shipping Transaction Form After Changing Inventory Item Master

I found Note 429368.1 that it is not advisable to update the unit weight on the item master while there are transactions and that it was applicable to 11.5.10. I am wondering if that is still true or if someone knows a way to programmatically update shipping after the item master has been updated.
