How to set up email notification in a non-workflow BP?

I see in the help files that there is a way to set up email notifications in a non-workflow BP (see Image below), but the help files do not give specifics.  It looks like you can put a certain type of data element in the form that can send emails on certain BP status.  How do I set that up?  Any guidance is appreciated!
