Installing 19c - question regarding odd requirement

I have seen this in Installation Guide for various versions and OS, but here I'll quote from the 19c Installation Guide for WIndows:

If you have had an existing installation on your system, and youare using the same user account to install this installation, thenunset the ORACLE_HOME, ORACLE_BASE, ORACLE_SID,TNS_ADMIN environment variables and any other environmentvariable set for the Oracle installation user that is connectedwith Oracle software homes.

And I'm wondering why these would have to be unset just to install the software?  In various trials, I have sometimes overlooked this, and have detected no differences.  Logically it makes no sense to me that they should be unset.
