R12.2 customization and online patching

Hello we have recently started our journey to upgrade our 12.1.3 env to 12.2.9. While we have finished upgrading couple of test instances the biggest question in front of us now is how to handle custom object deployment and how to tie it up with online patching.

While the oracle doc Developing and Deploying Customizations in Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.2 (Doc ID 1577661.1) lays out how Oracle is suggesting us to do the custom development and deploy but that doc also gives us multiple options around it.

I am trying to start this thread to find out how different people are doing it at different organization, what worked good and what worked bad for them, what made them choose one option against other etc ?
