Field for reference only & UDC codes

Hi,

1. Is there a field similar to Alternate Employee Number that can be used to store a reference number?

2. I would like to use one of the User Defined Categories 11-20. Is there a way to check what it might already be attached to before I use it for my purposes?  Or are these codes past 10 just blank/extras and ready to use?
