Do We Have to Upgrade From SQL 2012 to Upgrade JDE Functional from 9.1 to 9.2

We are on JDE 9.1 Functional and 9.2 Tools using SQL Server 2012 as the database. We want to upgrade to JDE 9.2 Functional and the latest tools version. Do we also have to upgrade SQL Server to a later version for this upgrade or can we stay on SQL 2012?
