Moving Tables from uncompressed tablespace to compressed tablespace - Will existing data gets compre

We are moving tables (alter table...) from existing tablespace (uncompressed) to a new tablespace (compressed). Will existing data gets compressed after the move or only the new data that comes in after the move? We understand that while enabling compression, only new rows get compressed and not the existing ones. Please clarify.
