Chart of Accounts: Increasing GL natural segment length from 7 to 8 characters

We are in a live production system using this from October 2016 for Canada and US.

Next year we plan to roll-out to France, as we are reviewing the current GL account (Chart of account) structure of France - the length of the natural accounts are of 8 Alpha numeric characters long, whereas the current configuration in our live system (natural account) is defined as 7 alpha numeric characters.

We would like to understand the following:

1. Can the length of natural account from 7 be increased to 8 characters long - if yes - what are the impacts to be validated.

2. As this been done earlier by any other clients - if you can confirm that would help.
