In Item Branch branch relationships, does the Master Planning family need to be the same in both the

In Item Branch branch relationships, does the Master Planning family need to be the same in both the Supply and the Demand branch when running Requirements Planning?

I have seen references saying Requirements Planning can give unpredictable results if they are not the same however I have not seen evidence of this.
