An interesting case study.
It is not clear, but it must have been a file system hot backup rather than an rman backup that was used.
I would add that you should run some diagnostics on the 9i database before embarking on this. In particular, utlu102i.sql and utltzuv2-10.sql should be run to inform the upgrade process as there are many situations that might need to be addressed.

I noticed that the controfile was created with NOARCHIVELOG mode. However it seems like the 9i database was in ARCHIVELOG mode. Was this done intentionally ? If yes, what was the objective behind it ?0
