How to use alternate item in sales order

Business needs system should pickup alternate item if defied in item master, at the time of sales order.

How to configure that need guidance.

Order Management is able to manage Cross-Sell (add a line with a related Item in the Sales Order) or Up Sell (change an item by an other).

Substitution can also be managed in case of shortage

To expand on Jfr's comments.

You will need to use Item Relationships in Inventory to build your structure of relates items, they can they be determined as Cross-Sell, Up-Sell, Related, Substitute etc.

The functionality in the sales order form will depend on which version you are using.
