Serial Tagging and a structured format

We are currently on 12.1.3 and will be upgrading to 12.2.8 at end of the year. One feature the assembly area was anxiously awaiting was Serial Tagging. From 30,000 feet it looks like a game changer in simplifying our processes. However there is still a need to maintain a certain format for the serial numbers. It appears that if you attempt to maintain a format you can't utilize Serial Tagging. To get this functionality you need to have the item set to No Control. Is this true?
