How can I default an input value from an element entry to a segment in an EIT?

Oracle HR 12.1.3 RUP12

We have a requirement to use the Extra Person Information DFF so employees can request changes to certain elements using SSHR and want to present the existing element input value to the employee.

I'm aware we can use a SQL statement to enter defaults but need a steer in the right direction.

If you can help it would be very much appreciated.
