What is a recommended way to use same filesystem on KVM host and KVM VM on the same system?

Hi,

for a project I need to use the same filesystem/data which is available on host which is managing some KVM virtual machines. Unfortunately NFS not an option in this project and can not be used. Are there any alternatives to share a filesystem between KVM server and KVM virtual machines on the same hardware.
