Order Release Agent PrePersist External Status checking

When a order is cancelled in our order system the integration comes over on the Order Release xml with a status of Order Order Cancelled. I have a order release Modify agent running PrePersist. Is it possible to check the status on the Order Release prior to the Persist? I have a separate Order Release agent that runs when the Cancelled status is set and right now I have two agents running at the same time causing issues. I would like to have the Modify agent exit if the order is cancelled.
