Getting Started with ECC and Reviewing Documentation for V5

It appears ECC is on a 6 month delivery cycle. I am curious if upgrades can be applied once implemented and what may be lost or changed during the upgrade. Currently V5 is the latest release.

I understand users can customize the appearances of their pages, like changing graphs, data points, etc. And this is stored as user preferences. Will these be retained during an upgrade, say to V6 when available?

Similar question for development enhancements, such as adding pages, fields, etc. Is all of this maintained as well during an upgrade? I have not yet looked at the details of proper ways to make enhancements other than seeing it was available, so this question may be dependent upon how enhancement work is performed.
