Assets with multiple costs causes unique constraints

Please advise on the following ...

Our Finance users discovered sometime ago, they can create an asset with multiple costs on the Basic Add - Asset Acquisition page (initial conversion cost plus online entry). Regardless of the useful life and depreciation impact. When retiring the assets, the Create Acctg Entry AE (AM_AMAEDIST) runs no success due to a unique constraint (caused by the process creating 2 lines for the Distribution Type RD).

Now we know the cause of the problem, our problem moving forward from a system perspective is how do we resolve the retired assets that are now locked and the remaining assets with multiple costs.
