Oracle Golden Gate Downstream Mining Database Character Set Requirements

After upgrading my OGG downstream mining database from 12.1.0.2 to 12.2.0.1 I had to abort and downgrade back to 12.1.0.2 because GG 12.3 extracts could not start up due to a character set mismatch between the mining database and the source databases, all Oracle databases. Could someone point me to the documentation reference where the requirements regarding character set compatibility are discussed?
