Upgrade from 7.2 to 7.7 or 7.9

I am an Oracle E-business suite developer. I do not have a lot of experience with upgrades outside of the application itself. I am being asked by our Network/System administrator if we can upgrade the operating system. My guess would be that upgrading the operating system would at a minimum require some sort of patching or updating E-Business suite, but I cannot find any documentation for the process. Can anyone let me know if it is possible to upgrade the OS without upgrading/patching the e-Business Suite and/or DB instance. We are running E-business Suite
