Can you use the commodity code on item master and commodity code structure set up without using RSS

We would like to use the commodity code on Item master Additional information tab , but this links to the Commodity structure program/ table P40500 which is used as part of the RSS suite

Can we use the field even if we are not using / licenced for RSS ?
