Anyone gotten APEX 20 to connect to Windows Active Directory

We are trying to get APEX 20 to use AD for authentication. There is a setting in APEX for LDAP authentication control to use a LDAP Directory auth using an Active Directory Domain but we can't get it to work even without SSL. Oracle's how-to (Doc ID 2212921.1) doesn't work and it states their support for AD is limited.

My web searches find other's having this problem and replies by people with suggestions but none where it eventually works.

If anyone has this working please let me know what you did.
