Can you dynamically link a page layout to a QBE field?

Is it possible to dynamically link a layout so a certain field populates with a certain symbol. Example attached.

Example: The application on the left is the base app. I want the application on the right to grab the Phantom Item number field on the left and populate it in the item number field on the right with an asterisks on it. If the asterisks is not possible, can we take the item number field in the app on the left and populate it in the QBE on the right. I do not know if it's possible to connect an application in the QBE grid.
