Patch Appliance to Latest Release Prior to Deployment

It's been a while since I built our current crop of X6-2 and X7-2 appliances, but in the past it was possible to apply the latest ODA patch release to the shipped release of the appliance prior to deployment so that you could then deploy it with the latest versions of the GI and Rdbms.

e.g. ODA ships with 19.6, apply 19.10 using update-server, add 19.10 GI and Rdbms clones and deploy

Looking at 19.10 documentation and can't see anything about this.

Is this still a valid method ?
