Running SQR to Excel file, file won't open in Excel

I have created an SQR to output data to Excel for a vendor that needs data from us. I am able to run the report to XLS or XLSX, but when I try to open them in Excel I get the following error:

Excel cannot open the file [Filename.xlsx] because the file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted an that the file extension matches the format of the file.

Has anyone tried to run and SQR report to either XLS or XLSX and have you run into this error? or maybe some of you have tricks or suggestions on how to make this work?
