Item number with multiple lengths / Dimensional Inventory tracking

We are on JDE World A9.3.1.3 but the question may not be version dependent.

We purchased another company recently and we're having a challenge integrating them into JDE.

They will purchase some items (long beams of steel) with a consistent shape. The only difference is the length. Their current process is to take what they need and do a 'nesting procedure' against the inventory they have on-hand to try to maximize usage.

Their current software allows them to have the one item with multiple lengths in inventory. For example they may have 3 50 foot beams, a 22 foot beam and a 7 foot beam all in the same inventory. If they need 2 10 foot beams, they'll grab the 22 foot beam and cut it down to the two beams they need and put the remainder back as a 2 footer.
