Why new domain is created after 12.1.10 upgrade?

When we install base R12.2.0 there is one domain called EBS_domain_<instance-name> under $FMW_HOME/user_projects/domains

For ex: EBS_domain_EBSDEV.

When we upgrade to 12.2.10 then there is another domain called EBS_domain and it is set as the default domain.

I would like to understand why we are getting another domain?

Why the original domain is not used and upgraded when we move to 12.2.10?
