Replacing Item on Bill of Material

I don't normally support this area, but am trying to help a user. She wants to replace an item on a BOM that is going obsolete with a different item. I tried searching knowledge documents and couldn't find instructions on that. Can you point me to a document?

She tried accomplishing this using effectivity dates and I don't know enough to know if this is the correct approach.
