How to improve performance of PAY002 - Payroll Register & PAY009 - Paysheet Report?

Our PAY002 Payroll Register seems slow taking 4 hours to run now. We are paying 11,544 employees now, up 30% from 1/1/2020.
Our PAY009 Paysheet is taking a long time now too.
Its pushing the current schedule of our Payroll Department to its boundaries.
Any suggestions, operationally, procedurally, or technical to increase performance?
Technically, anyone add indexes or modify the programs, to run faster, or more efficiently?
If you have had similar situations and adding / upgrading hardware helped, I'd love to hear about that too! It would bolster our case with the server team. (Growing like we are, at some point, we are going to "need a bigger boat", lol)
