Asset Management Archiving and vs Running Mass Transactions

We are in the process of trying to figure out the best practice for archiving our AM transactional data for the first time together with an outside party. At this point we are not looking into archiving the Master data per se. Being an AM Noob, I am trying to understand the concept and implications of this. I searched this forum but haven't found any best practice information or answers to my questions and PeopleBooks is not showing very comprehensive information about the impact of both delivered methods (Archive Cost/depreciation and Using the Mass Transactions.
