PO Approval reminder notification time outs

We recently started using the timeout feature in the PO Approval notification workflow processes. We noticed that whenever an approval notification times out, workflow sends an reminder cancellation email and then the next reminder email. Does anyone know what triggers the reminder cancellation email? I can't find it anywhere in the workflow.
