In place OS upgrade

I have an X4-2L running 3.8.13-118.55.1.el6uek.x86_64.
As a production server it needs to be upgraded to a new(er/est) version.
I see ReaR can be used but not tested on version before 7.
I am looking for the step to do a backup of the OS in case of a disaster and the recommended path to upgrade whether wipe and replace or in place 7 then 8.
I am sure someone here has done this and has docs.
