REST Connector Output when Response from REST call is an error

I have created a REST connector to a outside endpoint.  When an invalid username is passed the response is returned as an error.  I manipulated the output to capture the error code. When I test within the connector I get the parsed value I need and show it as an output variable.  When I add the connector to an orchestration the orchestration doesn't output that variable anymore, just shows the connector as failing.
Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated.
